fuzzynubbles: meet the creators!
recently i received an e-mail from a very crafty kate, of toronto. instantly she charmed me with fuzzynubbles, a line of cozy and colorful knitted hats she's whipped up with friend and fellow knitter hilary.
read below about how they got started and how you can get your own fuzzynubble! if you have any questions for them or to order, shoot them an e-mail!
this is their adorable model maya.
this is what kate and hilary had to say:
1. tell me about how you guys started doing this and how long you've been knitting it up.
Kate developed the pattern for Fuzzynubbles a few years ago when she was spending most of her days and nights on movie sets as a background performer. The original version was an instant hit, and she was even asked to wear it for the movie she was working on at the time! She continued knitting hats for friends, but soon picked up a full time job and knitting sort of fell by the wayside…
… A few months ago, blue with the thought that there was nothing exciting coming up on the horizon, Kate discovered a “call for vendors” for a craft show at her old high school. It was then that she got the idea to call up her old pal, and fellow knitter, Hilary, and ask her if she would like to join forces to knit up a pile of hats for the show! Hilary was keen so they got together within a few days for the initial yarn shopping extravaganza!
2. how long does it take to make a fuzzynubble? and where'd you get that name?!
The length of time it takes to make a Fuzzynubble really depends on the amount of free time we have during the day! For example, Kate works 9 – 5, so she’ll start a hat in the morning before work and take it with her on the subway to knit on her way to and from work. If she spends the rest of the evening knitting steadily, she can have one whipped up by the time she goes to bed.
The name, Fuzzynubbles, came about the night when Kate invited Hilary over to teach her the pattern. An essential part of the initial “recipe” was to include one “fuzzy” wool and one “nubbly” wool. After explaining this out loud, the two looked at each other and had one of those “light bulb” moments – we just knew there was no turning back, and thus, Fuzzynubbles was born!
3. any details you'd like to share on this signature stitch? or is it completely top-secret?
The only detail we’ll share is the source of the “signature stitch.” Kate’s Grandmother initially showed her how to knit it when she was just a little girl. At first she thought, “what ever will I create with such a floppy looking stitch?!” When it came time to knitting the original Fuzzynubble, Kate delved deep in to her childhood memories to create the perfect pom-pom for her fuzzy hat!
4. i imagine you two, being torontonians, know how to make a warm hat. do they come with a warm head guarantee?
Oh YES! 100% warm head guarantee!
5. you've recently featured fuzzynubbles in some toronto-area craft shows. what kind of shows do you have coming up?
We just participated in our last show of the “season”, but are currently in talks with other Toronto Vendors to develop our very own Valentine’s themed show in February! Details to follow...
6. tell me about the future of fuzzynubbles. are scarves and mittens on the horizon?
Scarves are gladly knit upon request. Mittens, on the other hand, require us to sit down and figure out the perfect accompanying pattern for the fuzzynubble hat. Our current plan is to see how well the hats are received as well as gage how many requests we get for full sets and readdress expanding the line early next year.
7. where can we pick up our own fuzzynubble? what are your prices? and, when's your cutoff for christmas delivery?
You can get your own Fuzzynubble by emailing us at fuzzynubbles@gmail.com.
Prices range from $20 for a child’s hat to $30 for an adult hat. If you buy 2 adult hats, we charge $50 for the pair. All prices exclude shipping costs. Paypal orders preferable.
Due to the close proximity to Santa’s arrival, we can not 100% guarantee that we can get your Fuzzynubble to you before Christmas. If, however, you are interested in one of the hats we currently have in stock, or if you live in the Greater Toronto Area, we can likely arrange to get it to you before the big day!
don't forget to e-mail them with any questions or to place an order. thank you so much, ladies!
